January continues. Snow occasionally falls. Car and motorbike batteries discharge through lack of use. Amazon makes more money, as physical shops remain closed. IKEA comes to the rescue. Power tools, hand tools, and splinters. Little projects are added to the list.
Entropy continues.
The video game hobby is having something of a good year so far, mind you. I am planning on getting a few more games and modding some arcade sticks. I’ve enjoyed video games for a long, long time, but last year weirdly didn’t play very much at all. I hardly touched my new Switch (42 hours all year) and only really played NHL with my brother on the PS4 in the evenings.
This year I will get a few more games, and put some time in to enjoy myself with them. It’s a strange thing, but with lockdown and home-office life like this, one has to also motivate one’s free time as well as their work time. Sitting down and working 9-6 on weekdays is one thing, but when social life is dead and hobbies are sitting there unchanged day after day, you have to motivate yourself to do things on the recreational side even more than normal, I have found.
I have a list of games to get, of modifications to make, and of challenges. I enjoy retro games, arcade games especially, which are often very challenging and require practice and dedication to master. They’re unforgiving and if you play a game for an hour, you might be repeating the first stage over and over, trying to perfect it. Very different to today’s gaming of instant gratification and enormous storylines. There’s a lot of fun to be had there, too, but there’s something about improving your skill and reaction time, and beating high scores.
One project involves making/modifying arcade stick(s) to use on multiple systems. I’ve nearly finished my first, and when it’s done I’ll make a dedicated post on that.
The main highlight of the weekend is discovering that my car battery has died, and thus I’ve decided to purchase a battery charger. I removed the battery from my bike yesterday, and am about to do the same to the car today. Problem is, the battery is in the middle of the car, and weighs 52lbs/25kg or something ludicrous. Oh well. Things to do in lockdown, I suppose.
Something else to do than taking rubbish to the basement.
